However, as you flip through the pages of your social media account, you may be finding yourself feeling a little bit bored with your options. You’ve already been to the mountains. You’ve also toured every major capital within fifty miles of every major airport. What does that leave you next? Well, if you’re looking for an incredible city that offers not only stunning white-sand beaches, friendly locals, and phenomenal local cuisine, why don’t you set your sights on Cancun, Mexico?
1. Explore the ancient ruins
Located right in the heart of the Hotel Zone – the part of Cancun where most tourists tend to reside – the El Rey Ruins are not only just a stone’s throw from your accommodations, they’re also super cool, too! Imagine this: an ancient archeological site dating way back to the 13th Century. Not only can you get in for just a mere 50 pesos (about $2.50 USD), you can also hire a tour guide to get the real deets about this place. Oh, and guess what? It gets better. The El Rey Ruins are seriously teeming with iguanas, which means you can admire these adorable lizards up close while you’re there, as well. How awesome is that?
2. Go diving to an underwater museum
If you’re a fan of the arts and you like to go swimming, then you’re definitely going to want to check out the MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte). Also known as the Cancun Underwater Museum, this remarkable site not only features numerous sculptures nestled on the seabed, it’s also an exhibit that likes to give back. Yep. The role of this museum isn’t just to attract visitors from all over the world. It’s also designed to help encourage coral growth, which is amazing for the ecosystem there. There are over 500 exhibits beneath the water in a variety of fun shapes (such as a VW bug, various human forms, and a man and his dog) for you to admire when you visit the MUSA!
3. Spend some time lounging on the beach
Of course, you’re not going to jet off to Cancun without at least planning on spending some time on the beach, right? Cancun is known for its powder-soft sand and bathwater warm ocean, and you’d be remiss not to enjoy it. If you’re more into a party beach (repeat after us: spring break!), then you need to check out the Playa Forum. However, if the iconic beaches of Cancun are more your jam, you need to grab your girlfriends and make tracks over to Playa Tortugas. This beach is perfect for swimming, as the current is very mild there. If all that lounging gets you hungry, make sure you check out some of the local food vendors on the beach. The fresh seafood really can’t be beat!
4. Get your shop on in the downtown region
Let’s be honest here. One of the best things about going to Cancun is the seemingly endless bargains you can score at the markets there. If you want to spend some of your hard-earned money in Cancun, then you need to grab a cab and head downtown with your besties. There you’ll find the Mercado 28, a massive open-air flea market that has literally hundreds of vendors all vying to get you the best deal on their goods. Not only will you find cute accessories and cheap souvenirs, but you’ll also be able to snag a delicious lunch on the cheap there, too. Go ahead – you deserve it!
