Is The Best Biometric Gun Safe Actually The Cheapest?

If you're on the hunt for a smart gun safe with fingerprint identification, I'm here to help you make the best choice on your next purchase.

FYI, Prices and ratings are accurate as of time of writing.

1. Awesafe Gun Safe with Fingerprint Identification and a Biometric Lock

Top-rated: 11,082 ratings | 240 answered questions

Highlight: For added convenience, this compact gun safe is lightweight, for use whether you’re home or on the go. It's easy to conceal under car seats, in spare tire wells, between mattresses and other out-of-the-way locations.

Helpful review: "The safe is made of a high quality, sturdy metal and looks a lot better than other lock boxes in this size and price range. The touch keypad is responsive and the fingerprint scanner works well. The fingerprint scanner can actually retain 30 different fingerprints, so you could use multiple fingers from both hands to open the safe, and have a spouse (or anyone else) program their fingerprints to have access. Setup was very easy and only took about 5 minutes to set up a keypad code and program fingerprints for me and my wife.
The Blue interior lighting is a great touch (and the main reason I picked this safe over comparable models). It's not super bright, but it's just enough to be able to grab your gun (or valuables) in the middle of the night without diminishing your night vision. The interior of the safe has a thick foam padding that feels very high quality. The safe opens quickly (within about a second) after placing your finger on the fingerprint scanner. The light and keypad run off of 4 AA batteries. There is also a low battery indicator light so you know when to replace the batteries. All in all, a great product." — Kelsey Benke

2. RPNB Quick-Access Safe for 2 Handguns and Ammo with a Biometric Fingerprint Lock or RFID

Top-rated: 8,077 ratings | 218 answered questions

Highlight: Sturdy steel construction.

Helpful review: "Nice and heavy - smooth open/ close operation. The safe fingerprint function is only handy if you keep up with the batteries! The rechargeable batteries I first installed died and I was forced to use the key to open/ change batteries - so keep those keys handy! If you set a calendar alarm to refresh batteries on a regular schedule, this should be a solid safe for you. Helpful tip: code your fingerprint from the angle you will likely be reaching from in an emergency, it's def not Apple dynamic. I keep in my nightstand and found that I had to reset my fingerprints as it did not recognize from a downward side angle since I originally setup while facing safe head on. Also, safe door swings fast - be prepared. I recommend." — Andra

3. SentrySafe Biometric Gun Safe with Interior Light - 1 Handgun Capacity

Top-rated: 3,945 ratings

Highlight: Gun safe is equipped with an improved gas strut for long-lasting performance. Ideal for use as a bedside gun safe.

Helpful review: "This thing is perfect for mounting on the wall at the head of your bed. It reads my fingerprint just fine and the code pad responds instantly! The code pad needs one press to come out of sleep mode and will instantly be ready for your code entry. To help you be fast and smooth with your code dialing I suggest you act as if the first number is doubled. So if your code is "1212" you would want to tell yourself to dial "11212" then you won't miss a beat! The fingerprint recognition is high-quality and useful. It wakes up the second you touch it then you slide your finger towards yourself across the metal reader. Once you swipe your finger it takes about one full second for the safe to open. In my picture you can see I added a motion sensing LED light and a magnetic gun mount. I bought both of these on Amazon as well." — Matt
"UPDATED: I bought into the whole idea that this unit had to be horizontal - on a night stand, for example. The problem is that space on my nightstand is at a premium, and inevitably, things get placed on top of the safe. That makes for a potentially dangerous scenario. Should I need quick access, the safe may not open, or it may cause items to fall - which will make noise - letting the intruder know where I am, and that I'm awake.
After receiving a number of questions from prospective customers about whether this unit can be wall mounted, I started to research others' answers. OF COURSE it can be wall mounted. And, to prevent the contents from falling out when it's opened, you install a couple of gun magnets for 7 bucks. I just finished installing the safe on the wall directly above my head. I can easily, silently, and in complete darkness, open the safe, put my dominant hand on the grip, and tug it free from the magnet in <2 seconds. Very nice. And now, no chance anything will be blocking the safe door - and I get to use 100% of my nightstand!
Ever since seeing "The GunBox" videos, I thought RFID was the way to go. It makes sense, especially if the RFID chip is permanently in the possession of the gun owner (i.e. wristband or ring). The cost (>$300) was a bit extreme, but I contemplated it based on the novel idea, and the seemingly ultimate level of childproofing. By chance I came across this safe, and for the price difference, I couldn't help but be intrigued.
Biometric scanners seemed gimmicky. Every phone, laptop, or other device with scanners (i.e. lockers at theme parks) all seemed too inaccurate, or took too long to verify and unlock. After watching the Sentry video, I thought it can't be THAT good. I ordered it, and have had a couple days to play with it.
I cannot believe how accurate and FAST the scanner is. I've TRIED to stump it by putting my registered finger at various angles, wet, cold, it mattered not. This thing has been 100% accurate, every time. Unregistered fingers, no way. And it opens in under second. It is every bit as good as the video would lead you to believe it is.
On an aside, the manual explicitly says not to lock the two keys in the safe, since they are the only way to open it should the electronics fail. Well, I didn't heed the warning. I locked them in the safe as I prove to my wife how well the scanner works. As I swiped, the green light blinked (indicating authorized access), then blinked red, and NO POWER. The thing just went dark. Nothing I did would wake it up. I called Sentry, and their agent explained that with sub-standard batteries (I was using Rayovac) of questionable age, they may deplete so quickly, the low battery warning may not activate. Further, without the key, the only option was to get a notarized form (found on their website) emailed to them, and pay $15 to have new keys sent out. Forget that.
I asked about specific weaknesses the safe might have to be able to defeat the lock without causing permanent damage. Of course, they would neither confirm nor deny that such a weakness exists. That ended the call, and I started poking around.
While I don't want to reveal what I determined, I can say that it is not only possible, but actually quite simple to access the latch mechanism and manually cause it to release - without ANY damage to the safe. Should anyone need detailed instructions on how to accomplish this, reach out to me by commenting on this review and I'll share my knowledge with you.
For the record, I am departing for a month-long trip in an RV in two days. Having a 3yo and a 15mo child with us, this safe was an absolute necessity if we were going to travel armed. Thus, waiting for a replacement key (which takes 3-5 days after submitting the notarized forms) simple wasn't an option.
As for the batteries dying so quickly, I don't know if I buy that. After getting into the safe, I was able to resume using it (albeit with the keys in my hand) on the same set of batteries. In fact, I've unlocked it at least a couple dozen more times getting my wife's fingers scanned and testing. I will end up using a 6V wall wart, and running that to the 9V battery clip to power this thing with AC. That will eliminate the possibility of dead batteries and hopefully increase reliability. I've got two more of these on order... One for each night stand, and one for the RV." — Amazon Customer

4. Moutec Biometric Gun Safe for Pistols

Top-rated: 3,219 ratings

Highlight: Quick access using the rapid backlit keypad, spare key or biometric fingerprint scanner.

Helpful review: "In the United States, on average, a gun is stolen from a home every 2.25 minutes... It is a dangerous epidemic, that is more than a little terrifying. It is a problem I definitely don’t want to contribute to. To be clear I completely believe in the second amendment, and the use of firearms to protect my home, my property, and my family. I just don’t want my protection to be used against me, or someone else. Just the idea of my home defense weapon being on the street in a criminals hands makes me angry.
But that is only the half of it. I have two grand daughters in the house. Them getting curious and getting their hands on my weapons makes my blood run icy cold. In most of those cases where a child gets shot, there wasn’t a real attempt at securing the weapon. Hid in a drawer or a high shelf just don’t cut it. They don’t stop a curious kid. When I was a kid it wouldn’t have worked on me. This safe is SAFE. It keeps a fair sized weapon, as well as a good bit of ammunition.
It is made out of thick powder coated steel. It is going to strongly resist prying, and sledge attacks. It is extremely sturdy. It also has a security cable, and mounting holes. You can bolt it down to the floor and know it is not going to go anywhere. To gain entry you can either use your finger print, or the code, or the keys. The wife and I keep a key on our rings. We both have our prints stored, and we both know the code. It is so easy to recode, we can give the code in the event we need to give someone access to the box. Truly, this secures our weapon, and gives us that security knowing it is safe." — TOP 50 REVIEWER

5. ONNAIS Quick-Access Biometric Gun Safe with a Fingerprint Lock or a Key Pad

Top-rated: 3,543 ratings | 72 answered questions

Highlight: Equipped with biometric fingerprint technology which is a proven method that is accurate and more secure than a traditional keypad lock and ensures single-handed access to your firearm device. A high-resolution fingerprint scanner allows access to your contents quickly. The fingerprint lock can store up to 30 user fingerprints for access by multiple users.

Helpful review: "I will be comparing this too the Vaultek VT20 pistol safe as I now own both. I will start by saying the value of this safe is excellent. It appears well built and I could not find any visible flaws. It came very well packaged. The buttons are large and the biometric feature works very well. I was actually very surprised at how well the fingerprint reader worked to open the safe. I was also pleased it stores up to 20 different finger prints. The inside of the safe is spacious and it is lined with nice padded material. It locks securely and positively and it springs open very well.
Let me get down to the comparison; The VT20 was almost exactly twice the cost of this safe. And if I had opted for the biometric version of the Vaultek, the Vaultek would be nearly three times the cost. I can confidently say the Vaultek is better in every way. The Vaultek is nearly twice as heavy, has double walled construction, has internal hinges, and two locks which appear twice as thick as this safe. The padding is thicker and better on the Vaultek, it has rechargeable batteries(this one uses 4 AA batteries which are not included), an internal light, lighted buttons, and an app which helps you change settings and reset the safe in case of tampering.
With all of that being said, if you are looking to have a quick access safe which will keep a firearm safe from children at an inexpensive cost then this will do the trick. If you want more features and a more secure safe, AND are willing to spend 2 to 3 times as much, buy a Vaultek." — B. Larson

6. Smart Auto-Open Lid RPNB Mounted Gun Safe with Biometric Fingerprint Identification or a Keypad Lock

Top-rated: 4,816 ratings | 277 answered questions

Highlight: Stores great under a desk or nightstand, discreetly on a bookshelf, or inconspicuously in a vehicle. For added convenience, mountable from right, left, or top side, depending on desired preference.

Helpful review: "As others have said they think it’s garbage. This isn’t a safe to keep a million dollars in. It’s mostly designed to keep children out or friends that are over out. If a thief wants to get in they can and will just like most safes. Now I have an alarm system which would be sending the police over and creating Loud noises that if the thief even knew to look for this next to my bed which it’s mounted on I suppose they could try to yank it off etc. but remember most thief are amateurs and just want to smash and grab such as TVs or anything else that they can get easily and fast.
The finger print works flawless. Secret is to program the same finger Maybe 6 different times at different angles that way it always recognizes it. I programmed it as if I was laying in bed such as a real world scenario if someone broke in at night. I saw a video of some guy opening it with a coat hanger and tooth pick. Well if you can do that in a min with sirens going off and knowing the cops are on the way then you can have my $400 pistol. Locks only keep honest people out. This pistol safe does its purpose and works great." — Amazon Customer

7. BILLCONCH Biometric Gun Safe for Pistols

Top-rated: 1,522 ratings | 156 answered questions

Highlight: Top of the line biometric chips and Bluetooth capability. Ideal for pistols, cash and other valuable items.

Helpful review: "This has to be the absolute perfect gun safe. I added a video showing just how simple it is to use and to program even without the app. The app as many features and also allows you to open the safe but you don't even need the app. The biometric fingerprint part Works flawlessly where it will not accept any fingerprint except the ones you program. And you can program up to 20 different fingerprints. Once you program a fingerprint then it can be used right side up or at any angle. It is red and open the safe no matter what angle you put the fingerprint on the reader. It will not open if you press too hard or not hard enough but will open every single time if you put normal pressure on. It is super strong and works perfectly and even has a light inside so at night you can see which gun you want to grab. It's just an amazing safe. I wish there were more than 5 stars that I could give this review." — Klingler LLC.

Helpful review: "Well built and sturdy safe. Biometric Fingerprint reader worked awesome. Had an issue and realized I had to store and save the finger prints hitting the reset button then waiting for the beep w the lid open and worked great. Once I did I tried other Fingerprints once saved and stored and the lid closed and didn't open. Only wanted one Fingerprint saved so no one else can access or open it. 9. VAULTEK VT20i Biometric Handgun Bluetooth Safe with an Auto-Open Lid and a Rechargeable Battery

Top-rated: 1,557 ratings | 254 answered questions

Highlight: Easily portable. EXTERIOR DIMENSIONS: 11.5” x 9” x 2.625”. INTERIOR DIMENSIONS: 11” x 5.75” x 2".

Helpful review: "I found this safe after seeing it on Hickok45's YouTube channel looking for quick access safes because we have an 8 month old daughter now who is starting to crawl and attempting to stand on her own and we can't just leave our firearms out any longer. Originally I was considering the SpeedVault Biometric but then I saw this one which isn't bulky and heavy and doesn't have to be fastened to something like the SpeedVault. One feature immediately different is that the Vaultek Biometric safe also has a keypad, Bluetooth, and keyed entry where the SpeedVault and many others drop one of those options when you go biometric. It was important to have another option other than just the finger print reader in case it were to fail in an emergency so this fit the bill.
It also allows you to store up to two administrators and I believe 20 other individuals in the safe finger print memory. I like that it is almost silent when opening where others make a loud clank, I love the inside LED light feature and the brightness can be adjusted by using the Vaultek Android/Apple app along with opening the safe, having tamper alerts, fingerprint management, a complete history log, and a battery indicator all via Bluetooth from the unit. The unit itself still has ways to show most of these but it's nice having the app on the phone. I bought the black unit because it will blend in well almost anywhere but they also offer white and camouflage and some others. The safe comes with everything you need including the lithium ion battery and charger/cable that plugs into the side of the unit, mounting screws, security cable, screwdriver, etc.
Since my intention in purchasing a quick access vault/safe is not only to have it accessible quickly but also to prevent our daughter or anyone else who's normally in the home from playing with what's inside, this is the best by far that I have found on the market. I have nothing negative to say about the unit at this time, even the packaging and presentation was nice. So, if you want a travel safe, quick access safe, and something to generally keep guns or other smaller items locked up but accessible I'd highly recommend this unit. If you are just leaving your guns sitting around the house or on or in your nightstand this is what you need." — Aaron & Breane Dooley
