VERPROOF Gun Safe: Tested By A Range Guy Who Cares About Security

I've been testing safes for years now, and this VERPROOF mounted pistol safe proved itself as one of the best for the money. Here's my hands-on review.

I’ve got a large stand-up gun safe from the 1980s that weighs seven hundred pounds empty, so it’s not going anywhere. However, it’s old-school with a three-number dial combination, and it requires light and about twenty to thirty seconds to open. I wanted a bedside gun safe to keep one handgun close but safe from the grandkids. And this one from Verproof fit the bill perfectly.

MATERIAL QUALITY:

The first thing I will say about this drop-down safe is that I really believe I got more value than I paid. I bought it for less than $100, and yet the metal it's made from is of remarkable thickness. It really seems high quality. Moreover, the combination pad and fingerprint reader are not cheap. I mean, they do feel simple, but not cheap. I did not have a single malfunction. This is obviously not comparable to my Vaultek drop down safe (which I got for $350), but for the money, the Verproof is really well-made.

QUICK ACCESS:

The little drop-down door opens in less than a second. Once it does, you can put your grip exactly where it needs to be. For less than $100, this safe offers great value when it comes to quick access.

FOAM INSERT:

The gun space is lined with thick foam that can be trimmed to fit accessories. If this is a plan, measure twice, think a bit more, measure again, and cut once. Keep in mind that a smaller pistol could be slower to retrieve because it would fit deeper into the foam.

MOUNTING:

The mount for this safe is great, and it has a full-size mounting plate to boot. The mount will attach to your nightstand (or the wall or a desk) from the left side, right side, top, or all three if possible.

INSTALLATION LIMITS:

Last week, I ordered another one of these to see if the mount would fit on the back of a door so that my hand would be only inches from the safe when it opened. The door that I wanted to use it on is not built to hold anything other than paint, unless it is screwed to the 2x2 frame. If I screwed this to the solid knotty alder front door, my tiny redhead wife would kick my butt up and down the road in front of the neighbors. So I did not do that either. What did I do then? I asked around and found a neighbor who did not have a safe near the bed to keep his pistols away from unwanted fingers. I gifted that second one to him to keep his house safe and ready to defend if needed.

VERDICT:

For the money, this Verproof is an excellent choice. It's well-made and keeps your pistol easy to reach. Also, if you're looking for a gift for a gun owner, what could be better than a practical way to keep a gun both secure and handy.
