I own a gun shop, so I test pistol carrying cases for a living. Here's my ultimate ranking for this year, along with my hands-on reviews.
FYI, Prices and review-count are accurate as of time of writing.
1. Case Club - TSA Approved Gun Case
HIGHLIGHT:
Perfect range day gun case, organized, strong, and lockable.
OVERVIEW:
This hard-side case is a dream come true for folks who take a bunch of stuff to shoot on range day. I love being able to haul a new bunch of custom guns to the range for test firing and the dedicated magazines for each firearm.
VACUUM SEAL:
This case can vacuum seal, which means it is waterproof if it holds a vacuum. This feature is impressive not only for the rare day that a case with five handguns falls off the boat and into the lake but also for preventing rust from humidity. This case will resist opening when it is vacuum sealed, and the knob must be turned to equalize the air pressure; it has a long hiss to let in air, not just a little burp noise; this case is impressive protection. Not only will this case allow the air to be removed, as well as humidity along with it, and keep air from coming back in, but they also supply a desiccant that can ensure nothing happens with the guns inside.
CONFIGURATION:
The foam is cut to fit the pistols and magazines but left for the owner to pull out. The right side of the case has a different cut, which allowed me to remove the foam and put in my headphones and glasses. I like this option but prefer to leave it in the foam that will hold another pistol and magazine set up.
QUALITY VS PRICE:
I own a couple of Pelican cases, and to be honest and transparent, I did not spend the money on them; they were review procedures. Pelican is fantastic, but the price is more than I personally think it should be. This case is about 100 bucks and worth every penny. I don't know if this will repel a grizzly attack trying to get power bars out of it; I am not sure a Pelican case would, either. If you're fine with that, you may also go for one of the softer options featured in our pistol range bags review.
FIT NOTES:
Glock magazines fit snugly, and the XD magazines have a little wiggle room. What I mean by wiggle room is that they don't have to be pulled from the foam grip like the magazine. I left the weapon light mounted under my 1911. Still, I removed one from my Glock 19. I also removed the O-light Laser combo due to worrying about the power button getting pushed and the battery running constantly. I am sure the battery will last one day; I am more worried about the heat from the laser; I don't know if it would burn the foam and light a fire, but a simple lever opens the motor.

2. Vault by Pelican - Multi Pistol Case
HIGHLIGHT:
Water and dust resistance at its best.
CAPACITY:
The pistols and magazines are set up to ride longwise across the case, and mine holds four guns and eight extra magazines, one in each pistol. For everyone who needs to keep count, that is twelve loaded magazines on board, with four pistols.
LOCKING:
This hard-side case has no built-in lock; a padlock must secure it. This is not a significant security deal, as any built-in lock I have ever found can withstand a heavy-duty screwdriver. A hard-side case with suitable padlocks can repel a screwdriver. With good locks, this case must be opened with a cut-off wheel.
TSA TRAVEL:
This hard side case is TSA and airline-approved. MAKE SURE to do it right and follow every directive. Check with the AIRLINE you will fly on to get the directions. The airline will instruct on the TSA requirements and the airline's requirements. I keep the box inside my checked bags so it does not sit on the curb or in a terminal, looking like a thing to steal; if they scan it and need to look in it, they will call me, and I will meet them to inspect it.
MODIFICATION:
The internal foam is not precut or the pull-apart little foam squares style. This requires the owner to cut the foam. There is nothing complicated here; make a plan, then take a second and look at a different one to ensure the first one is correct. Get a bread knife, if all that is available, or a good razor knife and slowly cut away the foam. When finished cutting the foam, take the block out and vacuum the inside of the Vault to ensure the foam dust is gone.
FINAL NOTES:
There are many poor reviews of this pistol case because the new owners have to cut the foam. What a dumb thing to complain about. The foam will fit precisely as it is cut to the pistol that needs to ride in it. Talk about custom.

3. Glock - Handgun Case
HIGHLIGHT:
Glock branded carry case.
OVERVIEW:
The only advantage this case has over other cheap cases is that the brand name is embossed on the cover. The hard-sided case has many foam layers to keep the gun safe inside. The rugged sides of the material are made of thin plastic, but the foam is thick.
INTENDED USE:
This case is suitable for carrying the gun from the car to the range. Be careful. This branded case will broadcast what is in it and the type of gun. This case will keep the weapon from getting damaged and protect the finish from getting ruined by transportation.
AIR TRAVEL:
If this case is used in a checked bag on an airplane, with the proper locks, of course, the lightweight build relates to a lightweight suitcase. If the Glock case is in the suitcase, make sure the suitcase is hard-sided.
BRAND FOCUS:
For the super Glock lovers, this may be the way to go. This case should also come with a Glock hat to complete the outfit. The case is very lightweight and easy to carry due to its lightweight materials. If I were to go nuts and keep pistols in the case inside my gun lockers or safes, this would be a great option as it would look like an original presentation case straight from the factory.

4. Eylar - Waterproof Gun Case
HIGHLIGHT:
A high-quality single pistol carrying case.
GENERAL IMPRESSION:
I have many cheap single pistol cases that I can get at the gun store for about six bucks, or once upon a time, that is all they cost. I usually don't keep the plastic cases that come with the gun. I don't like the stock ones because they typically don't come padded, just blow-molded shipping cases.
WATERPROOF TESTING:
This case claims to be waterproof, and it does have a rubber ring to keep the water out, but it does not look like one. I want to put a custom gun in and then drop it in the bathtub. So, I dropped an empty one in the tub to see how it worked. When I opened it, there was some water inside the case. That's when I noticed that I did not screw down the knob on the front. So I removed the foam, dried the inside out over supper, and tried it again, with the pressure valve closed this time. So far as a toss into the tub goes, this case did keep the water out.
CONFIGURATION:
The foam is egg crate style and has two layers, so I can put small stuff under the gun, my wallet, stuff on top, and the gun under that—whatever makes my day when I go to the hotel room. The case will lock with two padlocks required for the TSA, so get them in a combo pack.
LIMITATIONS:
This case is made for CCW guns, not full-size jobs. I can put anything that fits in or on my belt that is not a side-arm-style gun. The little gun and spare magazines will fit like a champ on one level. I put my wallet and keys on the top foam, go to supper, and then to the bar to support the local economy. I am a giver.

5. Cedar Mill Fine Firearms - Gun Case with Lock
HIGHLIGHT:
Small, lightweight case made from very tough materials.
PERSONAL BACKSTORY:
I will start this off by saying I am an accessory guy when it comes to my firearms. Not just accessories in the sense of optics or other firearm specific components. I like to outfit any firearm with a designated case, sling if applicable, any chokes that I may ever need for shotguns and so on. In my view a good hard case is always an important accessory to acquire for any firearm. Having the ability to safely and securely store and or transport your firearms is very important So, I was thrilled to come across the Cedar Mill Fine Firearms line of firearms accessories.
SIZE & FIT:
I picked up Cedar Mill's arctic white, TSA approved hard gun case. It measures approximately 12 inches by 8 inches and about 3.5 inches thick. This case can fit a mid-sized handgun with ease. I don’t doubt that you could fit two compacts in this case if you wanted to, but I used this for my SAR Arms 9mm and added one extra magazine in the case.
LATCH DESIGN:
When closed and latched with no firearm inside there is very little flex when you squeeze down around the edges. I have seen and had cases in the past that when you squeeze them around the edges the two halves will bow and flex a lot or even separate a little bit where the top and bottom halves meet. With this Cedar Mill handgun case there is no movement around the edges. The two latches that secure this case when closed stay firmly in place when they are in the open or closed positions. The latches do not wobble or slip around, which is very nice. The way the latches are molded makes it really ergonomically easy to operate.
HANDLE DESIGN:
The molded handle really fits your hand well and I like that there is a lock location molded into the handle area on each side of the handle. All in all, the construction of this pistol case is hard to beat.
INTERIOR PADDING:
The top or lid of this case has a nice thick egg crate style foam glued into it. I like having that foam glued in, that way when you open your case you don’t have the foam possibly falling out and getting in the way. The bottom section has two layers of pick and pull style foam and a third bottom layer of a solid piece of foam. Having those two layers of pick and pull foam really gives you a lot of options for customizing this to fit whatever your needs are for a handgun or any accessories.
LOCK DESIGN:
This case also came with two different accessories. The first is a gun case lock. This is a neat little lock that is also TSA approved. The lock is very stout. Unlike a padlock this is a straight bar design, that fits into the lock base. The lock base has three numbered tumblers so you can set your own personal combination. What I like about this lock is the design with this bar leaves no room for someone to cut your lock like what could be done with a traditional padlock. When this lock is secured to the case it fits snuggly to the top and bottom of the handle. The bottom of the lock has a clearly marked TSA keyhole which should help with navigating through TSA screenings.
EARPLUG FEATURES:
The other item included is a set of reusable tactical earplugs. The ear plugs have a rating of 30db SNR-27db NRR. You can wash and reuse these as needed. They are attached together with a string that hangs nicely around your neck, or you could hitch the string around the back strap of a ball cap easily. I used these earplugs on the range recently test, firing a couple of rifles and they felt great in my ears and worked well.
FINAL TAKEAWAY:
This is a solid, well-built case. I have handgun and long gun cases from some of the top names in the industry. Most of those cases are priced considerably higher than the Cedar Mills case. I would easily place this case up against any of the other competitors out there on the market. For the price point of the Cedar Mills Fine Firearms, I do not believe you will find a better option on the market.

6. Plano - Single-Scoped Pistol Case
HIGHLIGHT:
This case will fit large-frame pistols and revolvers.
OVERALL:
This case is a huge bargain. It will protect a gun from damage or fingers getting to it when it should not. The case can be secured by padlocks and snaps shut on the front to keep it close.
PROTECTION LEVEL:
The foam is egg-crate style to protect the pistol, but it will move around when I pick up the case to move it around, especially with a large frame gun. This case is not a heavy-duty hard side case; it is not much harder than the plastic that makes my cell phone.
INTENDED USE:
This case works best because it is a cheap and effective way to store a gun, especially if it needs to ride in the trunk of a car or if I need to stack some in a box for transport to the range. This is not the gun case to drop down the rocky cliff side or stand on; it keeps the gun from banging against other things.
ALTERNATE USES:
One thing I use these cases for more than carrying guns is carrying camera gear. I can place many items in the little cases and never worry about damage to expensive gear. I like to store my hard drive and SD cards in the cases of location photo shoots. This case will take a kick out of the way and a tip off the tailgate if no one is paying attention.

7. MTM - Revolver Gun Case
HIGHLIGHT:
Inexpensive and comfortable to carry to the range.
PROTECTION LEVEL:
This gun case is another one made to carry or transport a gun from one place to another. It does not protect the gun from theft or even close to it. The gun is protected during transport by thick egg crate-style foam on the top and bottom. The ends or sides of the case do not have any foam protection. The dense foam on the top and bottom will cushion and surround the gun, so the ends do not need added foam.
SECURITY LIMITATIONS:
The case does not have a built-in lock but has suitable, tight-closing clasps and holes for external locks. Locks that fit in the holes can be found to be TSA-approved. Do not go with the TSA locks that can be opened without you; get the locks that must be opened with you in the room.
STORAGE:
This case will allow multiple guns to be stacked on top of each other or tossed into the truck of the car and driven to the range. If the firearms roll and bang around on the way there or on the way home, the guns indie will be safe and protected. Since guns don't get hurt by the shock, I don't worry about that; if it is camera gear, I secure the cases so they don't flop around; the camera gear can get damaged by shock.

8. Case Club - Waterproof Pistol Case
HIGHLIGHT:
No need to take off the underlug accessories.
STABILITY & FIT:
I can get a case that will fit my pistol for under forty bucks. When I pick this up and move it, the gun does not move; if I toss it onto the couch, the gun does not move. This case comes in a precut pistol shape and magazine shape. The foam is left in place; I had to pull out the silhouette, and the gun or magazines fit perfectly. If I need to leave my light attached, I can take the supplied knife or razor and trace the area, then slowly and carefully cut out the extra and pull that piece out.
CUSTOMIZATION:
I have a perfectly fitted foam inset that will protect my gun like a baby in a blanket. If I had a red dot on the pistol and the light under the barrel, I would have laid the pistol over the precut, then used the knife blade or a sharpie and traced the areas to cut and remove.
LIMITATIONS:
This case can be locked with three padlocks to keep fingers out of the case, but this is not going to be a long-term storage option. For one, the foam next to the metal will cause rust. I could put in a handful of desiccant packets from stuff we get from Amazon, but that will only work for a short while. A plastic box is not a place to keep a gun for secure storage; it is just a place for transport and temporary storage. The other issue is this case does not have a tether or any way to keep the bad guy from just picking up the case and walking away with it.
USE:
The case is my favorite for transporting a single pistol and magazines to the range. I may even decide to use these as a presentation box for some custom guns in the future. The case has a rubber gasket, so protecting against the weather is good, and dust will not get in it, even when it rides behind the RZR seat down the dusty trails. This is not a throw-it-in-the-lake level of protection, but a rain and dust fighter is right up its alley.

9. My Case Builder - Heavy-Duty Pistol Carrying Case
HIGHLIGHT:
Removable sections create a perfect fit for a custom pistol case.
CAPACITY:
This case excites me, and I had to order more for different ideas. It can be made to carry five full-size handguns, but I can also use it to carry three full-size pistols, five extra magazines for each pistol, and full boxes of ammo, all in the same case.
FOAM STRUCTURE:
This case is made for full-size guns; the little CCW pistols do not fit tightly; they will fit, but not nicely and tightly. This case does not use pull-out squares; it uses pre-cut high-density foam to remove and leave the separation sections solid, and they will never break down or lose integrity. If you want to fit an AR pistol and an AR conversion kit, you'd need an AR15 hard case.
PERFORMANCE:
The rugged sides of My Case Builder are made for impact and crush resistance. That's nice, but what does it mean in the real world? This case can be stood on to see over the shooting bench, and all it gets is dirty. The padding is solid and high-density. The padding will not rub off the finish of the guns or the magazines. After filling this with guns and stuff and removing them repeatedly, the guns look the same.
SECURITY:
The latches do not have a locking mechanism, but the case does have many holes to secure with padlocks. The latches do not have a release button or other thing to lock them securely, but they latch like they are made to tumble down a mountain. The case does have an air bleed knob to secure against humidity and things like that, so between that and the rubber gasket, this thing will seal up pretty well.
QUALITY NOTE:
If it counts for anything, the stickers they use on the outside of the plastic are weak and will fall off or warp and piss me off to the point I pull them off, but that has nothing to do when protecting guns being transported. I bought this case, then some more for other ideas. Getting a custom-cut foam liner for a Pelican case will cost more than the entire case cost to deliver to my front door.
